The tools needed to help tackle the climate emergency already exist and could be used today to remove the equivalent of millions of cars from UK roads alone, a leading expert has said.

The UK is hosting the COP26 climate change summit in Glasgow amid mounting concern among scientists that countries are not doing enough to limit the emissions of greenhouse gases, which have caused average global temperatures to rise.

Many developing technologies are still years away from large-scale implementation, however, Greentech company SulNOx Group PLC insist their solution is available today and ready to make an immediate, significant impact.

In a recent report, the International Energy Agency (IEA) stated that the world’s reliance on hydrocarbon liquid fuels will continue and is likely to account for 80-90% of transport consumption in 2030.  The report, described as a ‘guidebook’ for world leaders, repeatedly highlights the need for increased efficiencies and strengthening of fuel economy in internal combustion engines for immediate impact.

In order to curb emissions, there has been a global drive to alter fuels, in the transport sector in particular, including increasing bio-content in petrol and diesel. In September, the UK government re-standardised the fuel specification for petrol to E10 to reduce CO2 by 2%. However, the move has also seen a 1% reduction in fuel economy.  

Dr Dan Clarke, Global Head of Science and Technology at SulNOx Group PLC, with a background in Green Chemistry, said: “A lot of talk around COP26 is about clean energy, which absolutely needs to be the ultimate goal, but we have to acknowledge that is, unfortunately, a long way off. What we offer is a solution to the world we live in today, where fossil fuels are still very much in demand.

“The introduction of E10 petrol was designed to reduce CO2 emissions and is estimated to remove 750,000 tonnes of CO2 annually – the equivalent of 350,000 cars – from UK Roads. However,  SulNOx Group PLC’s existing technologies, if similarly integrated throughout fuel stations for petrol and diesel, could potentially remove the equivalent of over 5 million cars from UK roads and reduce CO2 equivalent by 10 million metric tons, clearly much more impactful.  Given our products comply with current UK fuel standards, there are no technical barriers to prevent this being implemented.”

“This consolidates other examples including a haulage firm showing 8% savings across a fleet including 27 new Euro 6 trucks, operated over 12 months and covering 1.2 million miles, and so providing extensive data.  

“This shows that even with the most modern engine and exhaust technologies available, we can vastly increase efficiencies by improving the burn profile of fuels, enabling more complete combustion.”

SulNOxEco™ Fuel Conditioners optimise the combustion of common ‘light fuels’ including Diesel, Petrol, Kerosene and Marine Diesels as well Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils (HVO) by a unique combination of mechanisms including the emulsification of residual water in fuel, increasing oxygen availability, cleaning actions and increasing lubricity by over 30%, as certified by Bureau Veritas.
