YOYO Multidrops offers new gateway to low-cost van-based EVs

With cost being a major barrier to eVan take u, YOYO Multidrops says that its radical solution not only reduces vehicle weight, but also improves operational efficiency – and therefore cost – making it more beneficial for businesses to enter the eVan market.

YOYO Multidrops is a unique, patented all-electric interchangeable body system, that can be installed on any manufacturers’ 3.5t and electric 4.25t cab.

It is particularly suited to mixed fleets as it creates flexible LCVs with demountable systems, which can load and unload different body types – refrigerated, dropside, box, Luton, cage, etc.

The system significantly reduces loaded and unloaded vehicle turnaround times to as little as 80 seconds.

Retro-fits are easy on commercial vehicles up to 5 years old, making them suitable for existing fleets. As a fleet changes, for example as the fleet migrates to electric vehicles, existing load frames can be reused on new vehicles, thereby facilitating cost-effective business expansion.

Mike Huntriss, CEO of YOYO Multidrops said: “The YoYo system gives an LCV the ability to demount the body to the ground and pick up another load, all in the space of a couple of minutes.

“This makes it possible to share the cost of bodies between electric and traditionally powered vehicles and to transition loads for ultra low emission zones.

“Operational efficiency is a top priority for fleet operators. They require quick turnaround to ensure vehicles are in use rather than being stuck in depots. Parked vehicles are not efficient and don’t make money!

“We’ve calculated that over 3 years, investment in the system with 3 loadframes – which could be three different types – can save over £120,000 compared with the cost of buying and operating three different vehicles. And especially with the new eVans, it makes take up of electric vehicles much less expensive by transitioning the bodies and running the fleet effectively according to energy-type needs.“

Lee Parkinson at Trailer Express agrees: “The YOYO system has enabled us to fundamentally change the way we do business. We’re much faster to respond, more cost effective and genuinely able to meet the demands of our customers.”

YoYo Multidrops is also seeking further investment, with opportunities to support the organisation with its scale-up.

How it works

YOYO MultiDrops is a revolutionary system that transforms a 3.5t/4.25t chassis into a multi-use, multi-role vehicle, capable of being used in mixed fleets with unlimited types of bodies. The unique system enables loads to be lowered to ground level and exchanged with minimum delay.

Lifting and lowering is controlled by a single operator, usually the driver, via a two button handset, obviating the need for additional on-site lifting equipment. YOYO is non-hydraulic, robust and simple to use.

The patented system is self-monitoring to ensure safe operation in a smooth, controlled action and comes with a host of additional safety features. This leaves users free to monitor their surroundings for potential hazards.

The YOYO system has undergone rigorous in house and third party testing, in line with British and European standards and directives.  Type Approval is not required, as the load frame is deemed to be a payload. This frees the converter from the expense of approval schemes or the delay of an IVA.
