Accompanied by YPO and Pelican, Yvette Cooper MP (pictured, middle) visited Pelican’s electric buses and coaches to discuss how the public sector can play a key role in driving the electric bus revolution forward.
This visit follows the award of Pelican as a local supplier onto the YPO 1066 Alternative Fuelled Vehicles DPS which enables the purchase of alternative fuel vehicles, including buses, on a larger scale than ever before.
YPO is an organisation that supplies products and services to a wide range of customers including schools, local authorities, charities, emergency services, public sector and other businesses such as nurseries and care homes.
It is 100% publicly owned, by 13 local authorities, which means the profits it make are returned to its public sector customers, delivering even better value for money.
Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford MP, Yvette Cooper said, “It was brilliant to see electric vehicles being put together right in the heart of the five towns. I’m pressing for us to have more of these kinds of good, green jobs, including green manufacturing jobs to enable our local economy to thrive in the future.”
Ian Downie, Head of Yutong Bus UK commented: “We were delighted to welcome Yvette Cooper, Shadow Home Secretary to Pelican. We had wide ranging discussions on apprenticeships, local upskilling and zero emission buses and coaches.
“We explained that our UK owned company fully completes zero emission vehicles in the UK, adding value and highly skilled jobs to Yorkshire and throughout the UK. It was a pleasure to meet Yvette, with two generations of our owners discussing our 102 years of UK business.
“The visit was arranged by YPO as Pelican are part of their framework agreement as a supplier of zero emission vehicles.
“We discussed how we were leading the way in the world towards zero carbon public transport. Our 27 billion kms of operational experience means our products are tried, tested and proven”
