What do you do for your country? The government urgently needs to know

Leading transport solicitors Backhouse Jones is appealing to coach operators to urgently provide information about passenger data as part of the industry’s engagement with government about the scale and importance of the sector.

Its online survey is open now, and closes on Monday 23 November and the results will be used to help the campaign.

The survey comes after feedback from a meeting Candice Mason of Tring, Hertfordshire-based Masons Coaches secured with Transport Minister Baroness Vere, together with a number of other coach operator engagements with MPs.

It has become apparent there is a lack of passenger data and evidence to demonstrate the detrimental effect that the demise of the UK coach sector – as a result of COVID-19 restrictions – will have on the wider public and society at large.

This survey has been compiled by an independent group of like-minded operators with the overarching objective of collating data about the passengers operators carry so it can provide Government with detailed information highlighting the essential role of the coach in modern day society (to complement the asks already made for sector-specific support).

Whether it is transporting the elderly or vulnerable on excursions, providing rail replacement or emergency evacuation services, or even transporting military personnel to COVID-19 testing sites, coach operators are part of the very fabric of British society providing essential transport, social inclusion and a lifeline for many millions of people.

The move comes as a result of a lack of sector-specific support for the coach industry, which the government has ruled does not form part of the leisure and tourism sector.

“The data you provide will be invaluable in supporting the case to be put to Government,” says Backhouse Jones.

The survey will take roughly 30-minutes (this will vary depending on the size of your operation) and you will need details of your vehicle and passenger numbers for both 2019 and 2020 to hand.

Says Backhouse Jones: “We do appreciate that collating passenger data retrospectively is no small or easy task so, if necessary, please provide us with your best guesstimate of the figures.

“We would ask that you share the survey with other coach operators and on your social media platforms so that we can reach the widest possible audience and obtain the largest possible data set.”

The deadline for completion of the survey is 5pm on Monday, 23 November 2020.
